Working with many age groups is so much fun for me! This week, I saw everything from babies to adults with special needs. Each group had me saying “this is my favorite!” Here’s a few highlights.
Yesterday, I had “Toddlers Make Music” in the morning. We practiced our bell ringing (from the classic Kids Make Music, Babies Make Music Too) for our upcoming Holiday Open House for Music Rhapsody studio classes.
Me: Shake those bells and shake them….. Tots: high (reminding them to hold bells up high and use their high voice) Me: Shake those bells and shake them Tots: low (reminding them to bend over to hold the bells low and use a low voice) Me: Shake those bells and shake them Tots: high Me: Shake those bells around we Tots: go! (showing them to turn in place)
Here’s some Bell Ringers from a past performance.
Then in the afternoon, we worked on a 5 part arrangement of Jolly Old Saint Nick! We’re not just Recorder Rookies anymore! But these students first learned the melody from Recorder Rookies Set 2, (Music Rhapsody Members: this is in your Module 1 lessons). The students remember the simple version we learned and how the color coding made it successful from the start. The goal here was not to rush and play it for our parents at the end of our rehearsal.
Music Classes after the Holiday Performance call for something a little special! Here’s a favorite I’ve enjoyed for many, many years. Get your set of jingle bells (enough for one for each student and the teacher) and add a few surprises (I use things like a single jingle bell, a little santa, a cotton snowball, a plastic gingerbreak man, etc.)
Passing Game Preparation for Sleigh Ride Jingle Bell Activity
For the recording and more activities for this piece and other orchestral hits for preschool and elementary music, see Kids Can Listen, Kids Can Move . For a video of the activity at my teacher training click here!
Students sit in a circle, legs crossed with knees close to each other. Teacher is also seated in the circle with a bag of jingle bells.
“Super glue” your left hand to your left knee, palm up as if you are going to hold a ball.
Practice, as if holding an object in your right hand, saying “Me” as you touch your right hand to your “glued” left hand. Say “You” when you touch your right side neighbor’s hand (neighbor’s left hand). Move the right hand from your own hand to your neighbor seated at the right by continuing to say “Me, You, Me, You.”
Once everyone is successfully doing this to a pulse, the teacher passes ONE jingle bell to make sure they can keep the beat steady and the object travels counter clockwise, to the right, from student to student. Have the basket of jingle bells near by so its easy to gradually add more bells, making sure everyone is able to handle passing more objects “safely.”
As you add more jingle bells, make sure they keep the beat – if they are having trouble, continue with the game but the teacher puts the bell back in the container each time the teacher has a bell. Eventually, you will regain control because there will be no more bells to pass! Try again! Once you are confident they can pass well enough to each have one, use the recording of Sleigh Ride from Kids Can Listen, Kids Can Move . If you do not have this book (comes with the CD), you MUST get it!
Students who deliberately “have passing issues,” are asked to observe from the side.

Here’s a pic of some of my festive passing surprises – these come out only after we’ve been passing the jingle bells so its a funny surprise.

Warm Wendall – make the felts from the back of the book or dress up and act it out yourself. Great for unpitched percussion.
Five Little Snowman, Snow (Yuki) – These are fantastic for the 4-6 year olds at the Orff instruments. Options for other percussion too. Also option for felts or act it out, the children love being snowmen.

A new music teacher proudly proudly proclaimed “My school gave me $2500 so I bought a Bass Xylophone!” After asking a few questions, it became clear that this was the only instrument the teacher had for the preschool and kindergarten students! Oh dear, I wish I could have spoken to this teacher first. Music from an Orff approach means all the children are active in the music making. We want all the children playing instruments, not just one or two at a time! Here is a Preschool INSTRUMENT WISH LIST (in order of priority).
Order enough for everyone in the class plus adults, mention your Music Box discount when ordering from www.musicrhapsody.com

Bells, bells, bells! All kids love bells. Shaking, dancing, and twirling with a bell in hand fills all kids with joy and giggles! Did you know that this shaking, dancing, and twirling helps your child develop their hand eye coordination and gross motor skills? These skills are super important and help them throughout their lives in sports and school alike. You can help your child by tapping the beat on their body or by shaking your own bell with the steady beat while listening to our favorite bell songs!
Our Favorite Bell Songs
Check out some of our favorite bell shaking songs! These can be used year round but are perfect for the holidays! Your kids can even practice for a performance for the holidays. Be sure to record it so you have memories for years to come!
After years of rigorous testing with Remo, Lynn now sells some of the safest bells for children of any ages. For children 2 and younger we recommend the Kids Make Music Baby Bell Rattle. For children 3 and older we recommend the Kids Make Music Bell Belt.
Here are our wonderful students last year at the 2019 Holiday Open House performance shaking their bells!
