Watch How A little Story & A Little Prop Inspire Musical Play

Watch How A little Story & A Little Prop Inspire Musical Play

Let’s go back in time (way back) and see how my wee little shoe from my wee little bag (I punched small holes in a suede shoe insert and used a very large needle and yarn) inspires musical playing of finger cymbals.

Remind the little music makers to use their pincher fingers to hang the cymbals. We pretend one cymbal is the shoe, one is the needle and thread. Now come from underneath and pull that thread all the way up! Listen how much the children enjoy the prop and encourage me to return to sewing the “shoe” while they play the cymbals. The song is called Little Shoemaker and is from Kids Make Music, Babies Make Music Too book/CD.

Music Class, Keeping Young Children engaged

Music Class, Keeping Young Children engaged

Once again I take you back in time to my classroom long, long ago. But the amazing thing is, the children love to hear about the magical wee little man and his wee little bag as much now as they did then. Listen to their excitement as they ask “Is there anything else in there? Is the wee little man in there?” Haha. We examine our shoes and we see stitching and grommets that we are certain required the sewing and hammering we are practicing with our finger cymbals and tone blocks.

(This song, Little Shoemaker, is from the Kids Make Music, Babies Make Music Too! book.)

Pitch matching and movement activity led by a Rabbit?

Pitch matching and movement activity led by a Rabbit?

Its Bunny time! Listen to the “Jack in the Box” song (from Kids Make Music, Babies Make Music Too!) with our Rabbit in the Hat lyrics.

Sitting in a circle, we all tap the beat and sing “Rabbit in the Hat so quiet and still, will you come out?” Then the child holding the Rabbit in the Hat sings solo “Of course I will!” and pops the rabbit up! If needed, encourage the singing voice to jump up just like the bunny jumps up and then bring the bunny down when the singing goes down.

Next on the video (starting at 1 minute 13 seconds), watch the rabbit demonstrate this movement activity featuring a favorite from Kids Can Listen, Kids Can Move. The kids LOVE to Jump and Hide!

Gathering Drum: 20 Experiences

Gathering Drum: 20 Experiences

I’ve had several teachers ask me about activities for the Gathering Drum. Those of you who have been to my online or live training course know that I use this amazing instrument in every lesson, every week in 6 age groups.

I got to design this drum with the amazing Remo Belli himself, the innovator, pioneer and icon of the percussion world, founder and leader of Remo Drums! Remo visited Music Rhapsody several times and was incredibly supportive of my early childhood program. I miss him very much and think of him every day as we play his beautiful drums.

Check out my Five Little Monkeys, My River Boat, and A Sinking Ship orchestrated for the Gathering Drum.
