Recorder Lesson plans! Our fourth set of Recorder Rookies, lessons 19-25, is here!
Don’t be fooled by its name — I have teachers who use my “Recorder Rookies” lessons in elementary music classes without even touching a recorder! This is because “Recorder Rookies” isn’t just about learning the recorder itself — it also includes singing, movement, Orff, improvisation, stories, group work, and more.
Recorder parts can be sung, played on Orff instruments, or played on the keyboard. No matter the instrumentation, students love our lessons. For example, in the beautiful “Skye Boat” song, classes are captivated with its story, drama and the sound effects students get to create throughout the lesson.
And if you DO add the recorder, this will bump up the engagement of your students and help give everyone an opportunity to be successful. For example, in “Chicken on a Fence Post”, there’s an easy B-A-G part, as well as a section that includes a high E and D for a student that needs a challenge. “Trav’lin Blues” offers every level of skill an opportunity for improvisation. Both have suggestions for a dance, or you can take the examples and create your own.
Along with this, “Mortimer” actually makes playing the diatonic C scale FUN and helps continue the development of your students’ fine motor skills, because there’s plenty of entertaining repetition.
The new Recorder Rookies Set Four provides a total of seven 45-55 minute lessons. Set Four includes Lessons 19-25, featuring:
- Activity and concert videos of Lynn and students
- Interactive SMART Board and SMART Notebook visuals
- Lesson visuals for printing
- Student handouts for each lesson (or print all and place in a binder as a book)
- Orff orchestrations
- 7 detailed lesson plans
- A “Welcome Pack” of hot tips to make the most out of the lessons

Hi folks!
Take a listen to some of our students singing and playing this snowman classic! Accompanying visuals are also available with Orff orchestration, both free in Music Box this week (you can use the visuals either as a PowerPoint or print them).
Five Little Snowmen Video

Movement activity: varies depending on the age of your students.
For the youngest, all the children play the snowman, all melting at the end of each verse. Remind them to slowly lower, bending their knees, melting as the teacher plays the descending notes, followed with the last measure with the teacher playing glockenspiel and singing, “Now you all stand up!”.
For older students, form a group or groups of 5 snowmen, melting one by one. Others play the Orff instruments. The last measure can be improvised if the exact notes are too challenging.
Music Rhapsody Members, this is in your Big Kids and Young Musicians Make Music Module 2 lessons/videos.
Just in case you were on vacation when the word went out, there’s a new set of elementary lesson plans available! Find it here.

This month at Music Rhapsody, we held our annual Open House Week, where we opened up our doors to the community with several free events and classes for children of all ages.
One of my favorite events was Winter Story Time — take a look at my version of “Snowy Day”! My ‘getting dressed song’ is actually “Warm Wendall” from In All Kinds of Weather, Kids Make Music.
Take a look at the video here!

The entire “Snowy Day” video, along with detailed lesson plans, is available for Music Box members here! ALL winter story lesson plans are FREE until 1/24.
With Valentine’s Day less than a month away, you may need some fun friendship-themed movement activities.
In this Valentine’s mixer, “Heel Toe on the Line”, I changed “valentine” to “friend of mine” and added hand clapping to help develop timing and coordination for this age group. This is an annual favorite!
Watch the video here!

For the free accordion accompaniment you heard in the video, visit Music Box Downloads this week!
New online training cohorts start next week. Just register here and we will send you possible times or schedule what works for you.

Happy music making!

I am so excited to introduce hundreds of beautiful PowerPoint slides included with our Rhythm Readers Module 1 for Music Rhapsody members!
Rhythm Readers is an excellent choice since we can easily use body percussion and classroom sounds (hit the backs of plastic spoons together, or chop sticks, or using items like this as options for playing on plastic chairs, wood tables, or metal table legs! Our new animated PowerPoint visuals are great for the lessons. Printable visuals for manipulatives can also easily be used.
Not everyone has access to SMART Board or SMART Notebook so now we have included PowerPoint slides that allow visuals to be projected or printed. The slides are playfully designed to add fun to the lessons as well as stimulate participation, creativity and reading rhythm. Handouts for home are also on slides for easy remote or “in the classroom learning.”
Here’s a free sample of a Rhythm Readers lesson with the power point visuals.
