Four Songs of the Sea Concerts last week and what I really love

As always, Scuba Man was a big hit at the Songs of the Sea Concerts last week!

I loved how the alto metallophone can accompany Scuba Man so beautifully. Just play these chords in root position going down, then back up. I use 3 mallets, with two in the right hand.

Chord progression: A minor – G major – F major – E minor

DIVING FOR TREASURES! Our special treasure box contains rings, gold, shells, fish…

The soloists weren’t worried for one second when singing their solo; they just couldn’t wait to see what treasure they were going to get to hold! It was also a joy to watch the children behind the soloists, who were trying to see what treasures their friends would get. They were so happy the teacher kept saying “hold your treasure high so everyone can see them!”

For us, it’s all about the singing! Have a listen to these little soloists matching their teacher.

And always a huge hit is Sandy Sand!

All the kids giggled when we sang “You got sand in your belly button.” Really?? They’ve heard that for 8 weeks and it’s still the funniest thing ever?! I guess because they finally got to share it with their parents.

Larry the Lobster was another great moment.

It was precious when our teacher said, “Here comes Larry!” and then one child shouted, “I love Larry!” Then another child shouted to his mom from the bass xylophone and said, “This is when I tremolo on A!”

I also loved how one boy sang every solo with the teacher in “Down by the Ocean” instead of doing the children’s part, which was the echo.

I hope you are finding the same joy in your concerts and classes. If you need help, just ask me in the Box!

GREAT things ahead! Join me for SUMMER FUN!

Happy Music Making!

Songs of the Sea Concerts

An Ocean Theme concert is adorable for preschool, kindergarten and primary grades. A teacher using the Songs of the Sea book asked if 10 Fish in the Sea is a good song for Orff for Preschool.  Since this song has a chord change, I would say no.  You could play on the numbers on Cs but thats expecting a lot from little ones and it really wouldn’t be fun for the kids or the teacher (too much to ask, too much structure). This is something I usually accompany (guitar, ukulele or piano or some teachers use the instrumental Songs of the Sea CD) and have them play unpitched percussion, playing on the numbers, lifting their instrument high over head when they sing high, next verse do some circular motion with the instrument without playing, last verse bending knees to go down low with a low voice.  This is super cute with high voice, low voice and playing on the numbers.  Rhythm sticks (my little short ones) are successful for even the youngest 2 and 3 year old classes.https://musicrhapsody.com/product/rhythm-sticks/

Ages 2 – 8
Tip from Lynn:

The children and audience love the “fish echoes” following “Fish in the Ocean” for transitions. Have the children help create some before the concert. The bigger the variety, the more fun. For example, I say “Jelly fish, tuna fish.” The kids echo:”Jelly fish, tuna fish.”

Sealife Set

Sealife Set

Little Folk Visuals Sealife Set. A must-have with Songs of the Sea, the variety of sealife in this set results in tons of solo singing, such as in “Scuba Man” on Page 20. Be inspired to make up verses using these colorful felts for “Down by the Ocean” on page 26 or “Ten Fish in the Sea” on page 15 as well. Have fun with “Going on a Boat Ride” (changed from “Going on a Bike Ride”) in Kids Make Music, Babies Make Music Too! Book page 38.

8 & 12 Handle Parachutes

8 & 12 Handle Parachutes

This is a must in Lynn’s Music Box! Used for many purposes in the lessons, from a guide to form a circle (dancing around it) to having instruments on it (giving a warning not to step on the parachute) so no one cuts across the circle when trading instruments, to shaking, lifting, hiding, etc.

Here’s a few of the most loved activities for the parachute: Five Little Leaves from In All Kinds of Weather, Kids Make Music Shoo Turkey from Farm Sounds and the Sounds of Moosic, Lieutenant Kije from Kids Can Listen, Kids Can Move! and Sailing from Songs of the Sea.

Shark

Shark

Folkmanis shark puppet. From Songs of the Sea, the shark plays an important part in “Larry the Lobster” and “Down By the Ocean.”
